Insert Passage:
First issued in 1859 it is actually a representation of Miss Liberty wearing an Indian Headdress.
Made originally in 1859 – 1864 of copper and nickel, and from 1864 – 1909 of bronze.
Designed by James B. Longacre. All coins were produced in Philadelphia except last two years also produced in San Francisco.
